Beware of sinkhole near Rocky Bay

Motorists are urged to reduce speed and exercise extreme caution.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution on the R102 north to Rocky Bay as a sinkhole has developed on this section of road.

Ward 10 councillor Alan Cutten reported the matter to the Department of Transport (DoT) last Saturday, and department officials requested RTI to inspect the road and place temporary warnings in the area.

RTI placed road cones around the sinkhole as a warning, but reports indicate that some motorists chose to drive past the cones by using the south bound (oncoming) lane, which created an even more dangerous situation.

Cutten has asked the department to address the matter at the soonest due to safety concerns, and on Sunday, the department dumped rocks and sand near the sinkhole which has stopped vehicles using the road shoulder to pass.

“Some temporary road signage has been placed near the area. Vehicles are being forced to pass the sinkhole by using the south bound (oncoming) lane. I am liaising with officials of the DoT to attend to the unsafe conditions urgently, he said.

“I urge all motorists travelling along the R102 near Rocky Bay to please reduce speed and exercise extreme caution when approaching the sinkhole. Your safety and the safety of others on the road, is of utmost importance.”
