Umkomaas Saps bags national station of the year award
Complaints against the police were reduced by 50% and service delivery improved under station commander Colonel Mbongeni Isaiah Mngadi (now retired).

Under the leadership of Colonel Mbongeni Isaiah Mngadi (now retired), the station managed to reduce complaints against the police in the area by 50%, as significant improvements were implemented to enhance service delivery.
Mngadi achieved all expected targets and reduced the baseline of all indicators in the station’s annual operational plan and performance agreements.

As station commander, he diligently monitored performance and daily administrative duties and ensured full compliance with procurement processes, budget allocation, and the management of human and physical resources. As a result, absenteeism and prolonged sick leave have been reduced by 80%.
Through regular follow-up meetings, vehicles that had remained at the Saps garage for extended periods were fast-tracked for repair.
In addition to improving the infrastructure of Umkomaas police station, Mngadi ensured that members went beyond the call of duty in every case.
Shift commanders are always accessible to the community, as they can be reached day and night, and their contact numbers have been publicised through local media platforms and at community engagements.
The partnership between the Umkomaas Saps and local school principals, the Community Police Forum, traditional leaders, clinics and businesses is strong and effective, which significantly contributes to the fight against crime.
Umkomaas Saps spokesperson Captain Ranjith Rampersad said the awards recognise Umkomaas Saps’ outstanding performance, exceptional commitment in community relations, corporate communications, innovation and professionalism.
Acting station commander Lt Colonel Mthembeni Zungu praised Mngadi, the management and officers for the accolade.
