IFP retains Ward 13 in Umzumbe after by-election

The IFP received 43% of the votes.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has retained Ward 13 in Umzumbe Municipality after a by-election yesterday.

The IFP received 885 votes, ANC 660, MKP 336 and NFP 187.

Bakhanyile Nobuhle Shozi replaced Syabonga Doncabe, who resigned from the IFP last year.

The long anticipated by-election saw political parties working hard to win voters.

According to IFP chairperson in the Ugu District, Sfundo Ngwane, the party had to do some damage control in the ward.

“Our previous councillor did not do much and had areas which he did not service enough, if at all. Our aim is to make sure that these areas are prioritised and given what they deserve.”

This victory will ensure the IFP maintains its seats in the municipality.

After Doncabe’s resignation, the IFP had 16 seats, but is now back to 17, the same number as the ANC.

Ngwane said the win was exciting and showed that Ward 13 still trusts the IFP.

“They decided to give us a chance. We want to thank them and promise that they will be seeing change.”
