UMZIMKULU BRIDGE UPDATE – Jamjo Civils to take over traffic management
New operating times set as agreement reached with business associations.
The past two days at the Umzimkulu River bridge have been described as highly successful, thanks to the collective efforts of operations team members managing the stop-and-go system.
Team members have been working long hours under challenging conditions to keep traffic flowing.
“Standing in the heat for more than 12 hours serving our community with a smile takes strength, patience and determination. For this, as their team leader I am indeed grateful,” said Selvan Chetty, on behalf of the operational team.
Long-term plan takes shape
Over the past few days, the Ugu Business Association, Ray Nkonyeni Business Association and the Port Shepstone Business Forum have been engaging on a longer-term traffic management plan for the bridge.
These discussions have now led to a key development.
Jamjo Civils steps in
Chetty confirmed that the negotiation team reached an agreement with Jamjo Civils, which will see the company take over traffic management operations at the Umzimkulu Bridge.
“We are pleased to announce that our negotiation team was successful in their engagements with Jamjo Civils,” he said.
The handover is set to take place from 10:00 on Friday, March 20, with new operating hours confirmed from 05:30 to 22:00 daily.
“We welcome this new development and wish to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to Jamjo Civils for partnering with us in support of the South Coast community,” Chetty added.
Community and business support recognised
Chetty also extended his gratitude to key sponsors and the broader community for their support during the past few days.
Special mention was made of Tarel Krishna of Mzansi LDK Civils and Shiven Chetty of S Chetty Investments for their financial contributions, provision of heavy equipment and water tankers to keep roads wet.
He further thanked members of the public and local businesses who ensured that teams on the ground remained hydrated and fed.
