Umzinto mother searches for missing son

Lesley Govender, who would have turned 52 this year, disappeared 38 years ago.

A 75-year-old mother has been searching for her son for more than three decades, hoping to see him before she dies.

Although many years have passed, Sheila Govender is hopeful that her son, Lesley, is alive. She believes that he might be in either Port Shepstone or Marburg.

The mother said Lesley, aged 14 at the time of his disappearance, went missing from Riverside Park, in Umzinto in 1988.

Lesley disappeared without a trace from his home and Sheila and her family refuse to give up the search for him. A family member said they might have spotted a man bearing a resemblance to Lesley near the Marburg Clinic two months ago.

Lesley Govender was 14 when he went missing from Riverside Park, Umzinto in 1988.

“Lesley, if you are out there and you read this please remember that you are always on your family’s minds. I am growing old my son and you have always been in my heart. Your dad and sister are no longer with us, it’s just me and your two brothers now. We are longing to see you and we are always looking for you. Please let me know if you are okay because not knowing is killing me and I would like to see you before I close my eyes,” said a tearful Sheila.

Even when the police gave up searching, the family never stopped.

“When the police gave up looking, I kept looking but it got me nowhere. People ask me why don’t I stop, but I can’t. I can’t rest, there is no peace until I have proof,” said the mother.

“My mother suspected that Lesley could have had some problems at school on the day, and left. My mother said Lesley was a good child and ever since his disappearance she has been praying every day for him to return as there’s been no closure. She has always been worried if he’s okay,” said younger brother Kenny.

To assist the family further, an artist is prepared to sketch what Lesley would look like today. He would be 52 this year.
