Half-built RDP house in Mgobhozini frustrates family

The Khwelas currently live in a shack, which floods when it rains.

Nokuthula Khwela from Mgobhozini area in Ward 18 in Umdoni has been waiting for at least two years for her partly built RDP house to be completed.

According to Khwela, her family of four was excited when the building started, but for now it’s just four walls without a roof, doors or windows.

“We currently live in a shack and when it rains it floods. All I am asking for is that the Department of Transport and Human Settlements return and put a roof on the house so we can move in.”

The shack that the Khwela family lives in, in the Mgobhozini area.

Furthermore, Khwela said the family has lost all hope of moving into a proper house. Community activist Philani Msabala has tried to help, but to no avail.

Msabala said the Khwelas are not the only family with a similar problem as there are other half-built RDP houses, some only have slabs.

“We are pleading with the government to complete the project. These people are heartbroken because they have unfinished houses in their yards.”

The department’s spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, was contacted for comment, but none was received at the time of going to press.
