Protest over municipal jobs in Umzumbe

The MK party alludes that the hiring process was unfair.

Members of the MK Party in Umzumbe protested over jobs and the hiring process at Umzumbe Local Municipality, outside its offices on July 1.

They believe the municipality is corrupt as it is hiring certain people to fill the waste management general worker positions.

The organiser for the MK party, who did not wish to be named, said people from different political parties were promised these jobs, but instead they have been given to other people.

Municipal manager Shaka Cele signs the memorandum.

He claims that some of them are the children and relatives of councillors.

“There was no advertisement, no shortlist and no interviews, but suddenly 10 people are called to sign contracts. We spoke to the municipal manager, Shaka Cele, and gave him our memorandum with a list of our grievances and we expect a response by Friday.”

He added while the party was unable to stop the signing process, it has given the municipality seven days to respond to the memorandum.

Municipal spokesperson Sabelo Ncwane said the municipality will not employ anyone without following due process as prescribed in its employment policy.

“We have a database from which we select successful applicants as per our employment policy. This has been our practise dating back to 2023, and it also includes the Expanded Public Works Programme.”
