Art-in-the-Park in Uvongo branches out for Arbor Week celebration
Meet in the park between the Uvongo River bridge and the Central Uvongo traffic lights on September 5, from 09:00 to 13:00.
With National Arbor Week being celebrated during the first week of September, the artists of Art-in-the-Park are embracing the occasion by helping to add several evergreen trees to the park where the monthly art exhibitions are held.
Among the trees being planted are several wild olives, South Africa’s Tree of the Year for 2026. These trees were donated by the artists and Uvongo Art Gallery to create a greener and more inviting environment for future generations.
This investment in the park as an exhibition venue will take some time to bear fruit, but in a few years the trees will provide much-needed shade for visitors and artists alike.
Adding further excitement to the Arbor Week event, Art-in-the-Park convenor Johann du Toit says the artists will stage a special display of paintings celebrating trees.
“These unique original paintings will be exhibited on easels beneath the shade of the large coral tree in the centre of the park,” says Johann. “Trees have been portrayed in all the standard art mediums and in a wide variety of styles, ranging from abstract to highly realistic.”
Visitors will also be invited to participate in selecting their favourite tree painting through a simple voting system. The results will provide the artists with an interesting indication of the styles, techniques, colours and subjects that appeal most to art lovers.
A wide selection of original paintings and artistic trinkets will be available at the individual artists’ stalls, including original art prints at reasonable prices.
All participating artists will be keen to share information about their work and engage with visitors.
The August Art-in-the-Park exhibition saw a noticeable increase in visitor numbers, with the jovial and relaxed atmosphere clearly contributing to the event’s growing popularity. The Paint a Butterfly for Hospice activity proved particularly popular, with young and old enjoying the opportunity to get creative while supporting a worthy cause.
The September event will take place in the park between the Uvongo River bridge and the Central Uvongo traffic lights on September 5, from 09:00 to 13:00.
Should inclement weather prevent the event from taking place, it will be postponed to the following Saturday.
