Umtentweni Improvement Project needs your vote
The UIP is encouraging residents to take part in the voting process.
Residents have taken matters into their own hands to tackle a growing pothole problem on Commercial Road in Umtentweni.
Members of the Umtentweni Improvement Project (UIP) were out on the road on September 10 to repair sections of the badly damaged road.
The road has become increasingly hazardous, with motorists forced to drive into oncoming traffic to avoid some of the larger potholes.
Tweni Tidy Town, Mi7 and Lazer 911 joined the UIP volunteers in the effort to make the road safer for motorists.
The initiative comes as the Umtentweni Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association continues its drive to establish a formal Urban Improvement Project/Special Rating Area (UIP/SRA) for the suburb.
The association introduced the vision for the UIP about two years ago, with the aim of improving pride, security and the overall quality of life in Umtentweni for residents, visitors and businesses.
The UIP/SRA mechanism is provided for under the Municipal Property Rates Act of 2004, which makes provision for the establishment of Special Rating Areas.
The UIP’s stated goals are to create a suburb that is safer, better, cleaner, resilient, vibrant and inclusive, while ultimately helping to increase property values in Umtentweni.
According to the association, less than 5% of the rates currently paid by residents are spent in Umtentweni, while funds generated through the UIP would be allocated specifically to improvements in the suburb.
The voting process to establish the UIP is currently under way.
So far, 592 votes have been received from a possible 1500 ratepayers, with 473 residents voting in favour. According to the UIP, a further 290 yes votes are needed for the required threshold to be reached.
Residents can vote by collecting a voting form from Jaxx or the library and placing the completed form in the designated box.

Residents can also vote using the Google form link being circulated in local Tweni community groups.
