It was not long ago that Field’s Hill was in the news due to a recent horrendous accident, which killed more than 20 innocent people. No doubt that awful road has been the scene of several accidents and some of them, rather nasty.
We have a similar road here, namely the R102, that has also been a scene of extremely horrible accidents. Accidents which could have been avoided if the local traffic authorities banned trucks and buses from using this road. These vehicles should be on the highway, however, the drivers want to pocket the toll fees and reclaim it from their employers.
A proposal has been submitted to the KwaZulu-Natal Road committee to disallow trucks travelling down Field’s Hill and the same should be done for the R102 between Hibberdene and Port Shepstone.
Originally the R102 was built to serve the coastal areas, however traffic was diverted from the highway during repairs and this diversion became a monumental mistake made by the traffic authorities. This mistake has to be rectified immediately as the movement of trucks is on the increase and coastal residents may have to pay with their lives very soon.
The condition of the R102 is deteriorating rapidly because of the overloaded trucks and there is no reparation plan in sight. This situation must be brought to the attention of the KZN Provincial Roads Administration for immediate action.
