‘Alien weeds shelter other vermin’

Most of these alien plants form the undergrowth on municipal land.

DEAR Editor,-

Here is something so controversial that it is sure to spark a few fires. Maybe not a good expression, but some of the ‘tree-huggers’ in South Africa, and their ‘pet politicians’, should never have been let loose on an unsuspecting public.

The most protected species of bush on our coastline is an obnoxious weed called Lantana and boy, is it protected! Notwithstanding the fact that it is an alien growth punishable by a huge fine, it is allowed to flourish on all municipal-owned and controlled land.

They have ‘the Power’, you know. They call themselves environmentalists and woe betide anyone who does not respect them.

One twit in local government made it very plain that even a bit of dead wood was protected and not to be moved. The only boss he has, he says, is the Minister of Environmental Affairs – Talk about dead wood!

Now all these illegal weeds, which make up most of the undergrowth on municipal land, harbour other vermin on the coast who emerge from their environmentally-protected sanctuaries at night in order to perform their nefarious deeds.

So the illegal weeds with their illegal miscreants and well-hidden loot are there as a result of the ineptitude of a few obnoxious, but so-called well-meaning, ‘we are right, you know’, types who prefer to harass Mr Public rather than use that almighty power they have to rid us of both the weeds on the ground and within society.
