‘Disabled people need special treatment’

Staff are prepared to assist, but not all disabled people can be carried up to the office.

DEAR Editor,-

I am a pensioner and recently whilst visiting the Department of Home Affairs to apply for a new ID card, I realised that for a disabled person, this would be a nightmare.

There is no lift available and to get to the office you have to make use of the stairs. The staff are prepared to assist, but not all disabled people can be carried up to the office. Once there, you receive a number and then you have to wait in a queue for hours to have your photograph taken. From there you go to another queue for fingerprints and the whole process takes about five hours to complete.

Surely some arrangement should be made to assist the disabled? However, finding an official to listen to your problem is yet another nightmare! Hopefully some day someone somewhere will realise that disabled people need special treatment.
