DEAR Editor,-
The speaker of the HCM, Cllr Ronnie Nair, clearly decided that the best form of defence is to attack. He goes on to brag about the achievements of the ANC in government over the past 20 years and assumes that because it received the majority vote it must have been successful.
The matter of competence of its appointed leader and president of this country, he chooses not to address. It is clear that even he finds it difficult to respond to the very real allegations of unsuitability of Jacob Zuma as president of South Africa. He is not alone.
I have heard from many ardent ANC supporters who agree wholeheartedly with me and many other political commentators share my view on this compromising individual.
I choose to remain in opposition as it takes more courage to be in opposition than to be sitting in the comfort of the government benches. I am prepared to remain there for as long as it takes to convince the majority that the DA, when given the opportunity, will govern better than the ANC.
What Ronnie Nair does not mention is that the DA is a party of governance and where we govern, we do so better than the ANC. Every municipality under DA control outperforms ANC-controlled councils and the Western Cape government is far superior to any provincial government governed by the ANC.
The DA is the most diverse party in South Africa and is reflected in the public representation on all provincial and national party lists. Lindiwe Mazibuko and Mbali Ntuli are both loyal party members who both took career decisions to serve the DA and the country more effectively in the future. They have both clarified their positions in the press and to the DA structures in no uncertain terms.
The perception that Ronnie Nair is trying to create is a non issue. This is just so typical of the ANC and its apologists to play the race card and resort to insulting the opposition when it doesn’t have an answer to its own mediocrity.
Ronnie Nair is also a councillor at Ugu and I suggest that he pays more attention to their woes than to concern himself with international issues he can`t do anything about. Under his and the ANC watch, Ugu has become bankrupt.
Raw sewage is being pumped into the local rivers causing damage to the environment and is a major health risk to such an extent that it places our tourism industry at risk. Constant water outages are blamed on old infrastructure and apartheid and colonialism.
The truth is very little forward planning and implementation took place in the past 20 years and advice from the DA has been ignored over this period. In HCM, the road infrastructure is at a collapsing point and damage control is the order of the day. That is where Ronnie Nair should focus.
The Palestinian issue has been dealt with by Helen Zille and is available to everyone on the DA website. In short, we believe in a ‘Two State Solution’ achieved through negotiations. We believe that both sides should lay down their arms. We know that there are many issues at play in the Middle East and that there is no easy solution.
I once again call on the ANC members and structures to recall Jacob Zuma. I have given my reasons why. Please debate with me on his suitability and don’t fudge the issues like his praise singer, Ronnie Nair, tried to do.
DOUG RAWLINS
DA, Ugu South Constituency Chairman
