No emergency justifies bad driving

Drivers of official vehicles are not exempt from traffic laws.

DEAR Editor,-

I recently wrote to Councillor George Henderson in the hope that he could assist and advise me with regards to the following incident. Whilst driving to work at around 7.45am on October 20, just past the NG Kerk on the way to Ramsgate, a vehicle with the registration NPS 1 overtook me at speed, crossing a double white line and re-entered directly in the path of oncoming traffic.

To say that I started shaking is to put it mildly. The driver not only put his own life at risk, but mine, the taxi passengers, and drivers of other vehicles approaching around the blind corner from the opposite direction. The irony of the matter is that just around the blind corner was a massive truck travelling very slowly and so the driver of NPS 1 got nowhere.

There can be no emergency so urgent that it needs to lead to this disgraceful situation. That there was no accident was left to fate. I am more than willing to take this matter as far as it has to go to ensure accountability for the driver’s actions.

Even though Cllr Henderson forwarded my complaint to the municipal manager and copied me the email, to date I have had no response.
