‘Neighbour’s response was phenomenal’

The police, detectives and the K9 dog unit were at our house within minutes.

DEAR Editor,-

I wish to thank the Port Edward police for their dedicated and efficient work in Munster on the evening of Friday, November 7.

While my husband was out taking the dogs for their exercise walk at 8am, I was alone and had finished the housework and went to shower. When I came out from the shower into the passage, with only a towel around me, there was a man standing in front of me with a laptop that had been next to my husband’s bed in his hands.

Gaining entry through the bedroom window by breaking the burglar bars, he must have been watching our house to see my husband going out with the dogs.

He demanded money and firearms from me, which I told him I didn’t have and then I started screaming for help, backing towards the kitchen table to grab a big knife. I wanted to escape through the back door which still had the safety gate locked, but I managed to unlock it quickly and run outside, still screaming for help.

Lucky for us, we have new neighbours since the beginning of November and they reacted to my call for help. A special thanks to the Hansen family for coming to my assistance and calling the Port Edward police.

In the meantime, the burglar had gone into the lounge to grab the second laptop and a cellphone and, because the exit gate was locked, he ran back to the bedroom and escaped through the window.

The police, detectives and the K9 dog unit were at our house within minutes, checking the area around the security walls where the burglar came over, but they only found one of the laptop mice hanging on the razor wire.

When the police were finished with their investigation, they left, but within a half an hour they phoned to give me the news that they had seen the burglar at the Glenmore Beach intersection with a bundle in front of his body. When they gave chase, he dropped the two laptops and ran away.

We thank our Lord for sending us guardian angels that left me unharmed, for having such courageous neighbours and for a very, very efficient Port Edward police depot. God bless you all.
