Affectionately termed the ‘Slow Coast’ at times, the South Coast needs to wake up and embrace the new challenges that face us.
There are some wonderful businesses, both corporate and entrepreneurial, that have so much to offer.
There are also many without work but they too are not doing enough to change their circumstances.
What is required is hard work and application, and to accept that a little is something.
Some of our gardening workforce have a good matric and tertiary diplomas and they are out there applying their youthful energy and skills.
Perhaps they will be lucky enough to work for a business owner who sees their potential and offers more – like a driver’s licence opportunity, deliveries, warehouse work or something similar.
Sometimes little is more, as the saying goes.
There are so many young people with no work and few opportunities.
This is an ideal time for companies to offer internships or mentoring.
Maybe offer reimbursement of transport costs and a daily food allowance?
Regarding the companies that advertise vacancies in the paper – there is no excuse for not replying to applicants.
Your email can be set to tell us when you are out of office, so why can you not set up an automated reply to applicants.
Like, for example: ‘Thank you for your application, should you be successful you will be contacted’.
Several people have told me of their experiences in this regard and it is very demoralising that there is no acknowledgment of their application being received.
It’s time to help each other. Talk to people and look for opportunities to wake up our wonderful South Coast and improve the lives of others where we can.
On another note, our service providers can do so much more to promote efficiency and value for money.
I have to commend a few that I have had dealings with.
We have had experiences of shocking service from some who over quote, who do not return calls and who promise to phone you back and don’t.
Your services are in demand work hard, create jobs and quote fairly. Look forward optimistically. There is opportunity out there.
