I was recently told by a 79-year-old pensioner that he wished to buy a new television set.
Due to the pandemic he is staying at home, and sent his daughter and partner to a major retailer to purchase a TV.
His TV licence is in his name, and was produced at the store.
However, the couple was told that the licence holder must be present in order to verify the licence, otherwise the store could lose its business licence.
It was suggested that the pensioner present himself in the parking lot where a member of staff would verify that he is the licence holder.
President Cyril Ramaphosa says that the elderly should not go out to protect themselves from the virus. A TV license requirement is going against the President’s call to stay home.
On one hand they say don’t go out but on the other hand one is forced to go out because of requirements by businesses to abide by the law. Catch-22 for the elderly.
I am sure there are many other pensioners countrywide facing similar obstacles in protecting themselves because of legal requirements.
