I agree wholeheartedly with Geraldine Lange’s complaint about litter along Sugar Mill Road (‘What a mess, does anyone care?’ SCH July 17) .
I’m afraid, however, that it’s not exclusive to Sugar Mill Road.
The area behind the Oribi Plaza is absolutely disgusting and the Sandspit area is a rubbish dump of fishing detritus although I don’t think the fishermen are altogether to blame here – one can see the occasional attempts at bagging rubbish but there are no bins.

So would bins would be the answer? Apparently not. When we bought our home on this beautiful coast eight years ago a neighbour told us the area was nicknamed ‘Slumwich Port’ because of all the litter.
Here we do have bins though… from the Damba mouth to Banana Beach there are quite a few strategically placed bins… BUT THEY’RE NEVER CLEARED!
Around each bin is a pile of trash growing menacingly larger each day. My wife and I have done the occasional cleanup of the Sunwich Trail picnic area but it’s a Sisyphean task.
Do our rates not pay for the employment of someone to empty the beachfront bins at least?
