In my view: Quality over quantity

Slightly disappointing considering he's quite a bright spark in other aspects.

You must have heard this saying plenty times, but have you ever taken the time to consider what it actually means?

I know of someone who uses this phrase all the time and I’m starting to think he might not know himself.

Slightly disappointing considering he’s quite a bright spark in other aspects.

It’s become a standing joke between us and he throws the phrase in every so often to justify any kind of nonsense he tries to spin my way.

Anyway, quality over quantity essentially means that choosing things of a higher standard is more important than the number of things you have.

So yes, in my view, we should absolutely value quality above all.

Let me take you back to days at school where popularity seemed the most important commodity of all.

Most of the time being part of the ‘it crowd’ meant you had rule of the land or in this case, rule of the schoolground.

Personally, I wouldn’t say I was popular, I think I found myself amongst those who were – still figuring that one out honestly.

My point being, it took a few years after school to realise that all you need are a few genuine friendships.

I think one of the most ironic things to see is a person surrounded by others, and yet has nobody to confide in.

Choosing quantity can often lead to meaningless friendships.

Having said that, don’t you think it’s best to have at least one reliable friend who you can speak to with zero reservation?

It’s not good to keep things bottled up for too long and have it eating at you.

Therefore, quality over quantity, especially when it comes to friendships and relationships.

There is a philosophy in life that satisfaction does not come from quantity (unless it’s shoes, you can never have enough of those).

Once we grasp this concept, it becomes easier to appreciate the quality of things as well as the joy that comes with it.

More so, it teaches us gratuity because most times simplicity can actually be fulfilling.

So, why choose quality over quantity?

I think over and above everything, it saves you energy because your life becomes realigned with more purpose and depth.

You might also find yourself less distracted by only surrounding yourself with things of significance.

You could have an abundance of material belongings but that does not guarantee that it is meaningful (again, unless it’s shoes).

At the end of the day and at the end of your life, you aren’t going to be remembered for the number of friends or social media followers you had.

You may not even be remembered for the number of years you lived, but rather for the way that you lived those years.

Remember, choosing quantity won’t help in defining the best possible outcome of your life.
