OPINION: ‘Volunteers plan to patrol Port Shepstone to safeguard shoppers’

We have been circulating invites on social media to take action to protect our town.

DEAR Editor;

I would like to inform law enforcement about the action to be taken, to safeguard our beloved Port Shepstone as communities from the areas surrounding our town.

People are being robbed during daylight hours. As concerned citizens of South Africa, particularly on the South Coast, we have decided to take action to protect our people.

People have been robbed of documents such as IDs, matric certificates, bank cards and huge amounts of money for groceries and funerals.

We have been circulating invites on social media to take action to protect our town.

I tried to get hold of the contact details of the MEC for safety in the province but it’s not listed on the website, as far as for the KZN premier, his contact details are not there either.

The Ugu mayor and Ray Nkonyeni law enforcement telephone numbers are always engaged. The phones are not answered which makes me wonder what one does when in need after a robbery, if telephone calls are not picked up.

This is so embarrassing since this municipality was named after my late dad. I also tried to get in contact with the national minister of police but that number is also not listed.

We have decided to take action to patrol the town on December 17 from 08:00 to 19:00 armed with whistles as a tool that will be used when incidents occur.

We would like to have police onboard in the joint venture with our volunteers, so they can perform their duties along with us. We can’t let our sisters, brothers and elderly people be victimised while we still can do something to prevent this, as many people are now scared to shop in town.

The presence of police on that busy day will prevent the loss of lives.

The meeting point is at the Total Garage opposite Shoprite on Friday, December 17 at 08:00.
