Tuning in: Back to school, technology challenges and car trouble

When I turned the music off, I discovered the situation was far worse than imagined. I called a mechanic who fixed and sorted it out. Thankfully.

It has been back to school for a week, I’m sure routines have been established and life is taking on a form of regularity.

I apologise for no column last week. It was a technologically challenged time for me.

The laptop died (along with it went the email), the TV died and then the brakes in the car started to make a very strange noise.

At first I thought it was the weird music I was playing (Viking music by Danheim) with a lot of drums and bangs. Every time I touched the brake it thumped and then I know I heard an expletive coming from under the bonnet.

When I turned the music off, I discovered the situation was far worse than imagined. I called a mechanic who fixed and sorted it out. Thankfully. The TV was removed, fixed and returned. It stopped working again. It was removed again, and I am waiting.

The laptop comes from the IT guru precious son in Johannesburg. Perhaps via Iceland? At some stage I will smile and understand just how patient I have really been.

The following is written by Frances Reynolds of Umkomaas:

2021
I didn’t get famous. I didn’t get rich
I didn’t get murdered and chucked in a ditch
I wasn’t on TV. I wasn’t a star ..
But then, I was also not hit by a car (that happened the year before)
I didn’t travel, I didn’t have babies
I didn’t get bit by a dog that had rabies (that was also the year before)
I did not get an honorary PhD
However I also was not lost at sea
I did not inherit a stately abode
But also the floor downstairs did not explode
My Lotto and Powerball still did not win
But armed robbers, luckily did not break in (again the year before)
Last year does not go down as one of the best
And things could be batter
I’d like to suggest
But just to be grateful I’ve written this verse
I know for a fact things could always be worse.
