DEAR Editor;
The mighty oak has fallen. The branches are on the floor waiting to be collected into a heap to dry, and to be burnt. But the young trees will rise again.
Danny Chetty was like that oak tree. I remember, I met Danny when I was destitute, from a broken home and we had no future. He said rise up and make me proud. He offered me a job at Practical Ministries to run the desk, to bridge the gap between rural and urban ministries by hosting breakfasts and discussing topics.
The venues were restaurants and hotels giving dignity to rural ministries. The programme was successful. I was sent to Israel with a team of rural women to interact with Bedouin women to compare cultures. This interaction was successful and bore much fruit.
When violence broke out on the South Coast, rural women were given shelter at the Izotsha Care Centre.
One of the doctors volunteered to treat the women who were hurt, giving them back their dignity. This programme was successful under the leadership of Joyce Ngoma.
Danny always picked people up who were destitute and made them somebody. I remember him sending rural students to America and Sweden for training. Now they hold admirable positions in our country.
He loved his mother and family dearly. Danny always addressed me and Joyce as Mom Mags and Mom Joyce. Practical Ministries will never die as he still has his foot soldiers, one of them being Pastor Reggie John. We surely are going to miss him.
