OPINION: Remember the days of the Christmas card…

Usually, a list of cards received was made, so that next Christmas one made certain no one was forgotten.

Nostalgia is a two-edged sword. It can make one happily satisfied in the road one has navigated or bore to tears those poor souls upon whom your nostalgic reminiscences are being heaped.

Well, let me perhaps get a disinterested yawn from a few readers, but, remember the days of the Christmas card?
Remember attaching the string or the wool strand to the picture rail and then, once a heap of cards had arrived, the delicate job of hanging them over the line was begun.

Overseas cards always were more attractive with scenes of snow covered fir trees, warmly attired carol singers with lantern and tinsel and holly.

But then again, Christmas was tightly bound to a snow-filled landscape.

Christmas on the flat, dry, stony plains of the Karoo did not really carry the same cuddly atmosphere.
Usually, a list of cards received was made, so that next Christmas one made certain no one was forgotten.
Heaven forbid one missed a card-sender of this year.

Besides being a money spinning industry employing people to write words and do the designing of the cards, there were card shops and the postal service who handled the delivery to your post box.
Pity we humans are so adept at putting people out of work with our newfangled inventions. Merry Christmas to you all.
