OPINION: Football sponsorship must surely be a joke

"I now understand that the South African government (SA Tourism) is about to throw R1-billion of taxpayers' money down the drain by 'sponsoring' a football club (Tottenham Hotspur) in the UK."

We are situated on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. Farming and tourism are the main sources of employment in this region and both are heavily dependent on an adequate water supply. Over the last five years we have suffered from constant water problems.

I now understand that the South African government (SA Tourism) is about to throw R1-billion of taxpayers’ money down the drain by ‘sponsoring’ a football club (Tottenham Hotspur) in the UK.

Is this an April Fool’s joke two months early?

Over the last holiday season many tourists cancelled their holidays due to lack of water in the Ugu area and yet the SA government is contemplating making this ludicrous decision.

Has no one in government got the intelligence to work out that R1-billion spent on fixing the infrastructure in the Ugu Municipality would cure the water problem?
