OPINION: One community holds Ward 1 to ‘ransom’

"This problem is solvable but remains unresolved due to the failed ANC majority that dictates how the district municipality is governed."

There are communities in Ward 1 that I speak for, even though I know that there are many other communities in a similar situation, who have not had water in their taps for weeks, months and in some cases, years.

They have been promised a lifeline of an electricity line from the Eastern Cape, and now it seems this promise is now relegated to the same as a gift from Santa Claus or a chocolate egg from the Easter Bunny.

We are told that this electricity line will alleviate a large percentage of our problems and put water in our taps.
However, one community in the Eastern Cape is not prepared to allow this to happen and, somehow, they have been allowed to hold 190 000 people ransom for more than three years and it is okay? No wonder people are thinking this promise is just a myth.

We have all seen and experienced the spectacular failures of the ANC in this beautiful South Africa of ours, but when we have to witness the individual tragedies of an old lady collapsing in her home because of no water, old people and children carrying small amounts of water over vast distances, small children in pre-schools having no water to drink, wash their hands or flush their toilets – then you realise the depths this government has brought us to.

This problem is solvable but remains unresolved due to the failed ANC majority that dictates how the district municipality is governed.

They lack the understanding, care and will to do what is needed. Ugu have many hardworking and dedicated employees who are not given the resources they need to do what needs to be done.

If we have to wait for the ballot box in 2024 in order to solve the problem by getting rid of the ANC, this corrupt and lying organisation, many people think it may be too late.
