What are we going to do when the Eskom gift to us, of this magical blackout time becomes just a memory.
Will it be a subject discussed in low tones around the table, for in the event one invokes the curse of the loadshedding dwarf?
For this was a time of great hardship for those of us who did not possess the small four stroke motorbike engine that was mounted on a steel tubular frame, and stood waiting to be called to duty.
This wonderful machine provided power to help us from going totally insane, especially in the four hour stretches.
However, this item was a thirsty blighter so some beer money had to be diverted to slake its thirstiness.
Here at the coast, the soothing crashing candescent rumble of the waves is now second to the rasping hoarse sounding cacophony of the exhaust of the generator.
All around there be darkness. Pinpoints of light pierce the black canopy that is the sky, yet nearby an island of light and noise where a naturally aspirated petrol engine gives life and light in the darkness of the lights-out regime.
Question remains – will my fellow South Africans be able to adjust to living in a country where there are no power-outs, or will we just trip the switch on the DB board now and again at a crucial time of the day, so we can reminisce?
