OPINION: Is a brighter future waiting for us?

"This leads us South Africans to have to redesign our days so that our children’s lives are not overly disrupted and that food is on the table."

My dear fellow South Africans, after some thought, I liken the situation in our wonderful but challenged country, to a medieval castle.

These structures, were usually built in positions of calculated inaccessibility, so as to provide protection against an aggressive foe. Of course, regardless of the castle’s physical position, the nature of war would lead enemy forces to develop weaponry specific to forcing entry to the castle under siege.

Here in our fine country, we are under a benign attack from within the boundaries of our country, my fellow South Africans. Benign, because it is a quiet and stealthy inroad into our motherland from within. As with the castle, the external water supply would be poisoned or stopped. What is happening here in South Africa? Sewage contaminated water supplies and a cholera outbreak. Next. Blocking the food supply and ability to cook food and provide heat in the castle.

Much as we do not have any problem at present about food security, the non-supply of electricity at peak times of the day. This leads us South Africans to have to redesign our days so that our children’s lives are not overly disrupted and that food is on the table. One particular nasty weapon of medieval times was the trebuchet. This item was a very large mechanically operated slingshot which was capable of launching large item towards the castle.

Big stones to breach the wall or maybe animal carcasses to spread disease inside the castle. Here in South Africa, my fellow South Africans, our homes and office defences are not accosted by trebuchet launched boulders, but breached by criminally-minded fellow South Africans, who want that which they do not have! In essence, like the attacking force surrounding the castle, wanting what is behind the castle walls.

Unfortunately, unless the occupants of the castle are adequately prepared for a siege, it is merely a question of time before the castle falls to the aggressively disposed forces. My question therefore is, will we be able to withstand the onslaught? Will we be able to rise, like the mythical phoenix, and forge our way into a brighter future?
