Pat’s Pet Talk: Don’t get a dog for the wrong reason

Getting a dog is extending your family, and that means love and care.

Yes I’m back, the Cape was not for me, too many baboons and scorpions for my dogs to chase.

So, let’s resume my talks and helpful hints. Since I’ve returned there has been an increase in folks wanting to get a dog. Please, don’t get a dog for the wrong reason, if you need security, then there are many local companies that can help. Getting a dog is extending your family, and that means love and care.

But before you go out searching, look at your premises carefully. Is the property safely enclosed, does it have a fence or wall that would prevent a dog from escaping into the dangerous wide world? I have seen so many messages from distraught owners looking for their pets, and likewise so many folks finding dogs strolling around lost.

Deciding on which dog, male or female, mixed breed or pedigree, large or small, will all depend on your time and finances. The local shelters all have so many to choose from, but remember puppies may grow to be unmanageable, whereas an older dog is usually calmer and easier to live with. Bear in mind that a large dog will live eight to 12 years, a small dog 10 to 15 years, so if you are elderly that family member may outlive you.
Pets cost money. Nutritious food ( like everything else ) is becoming expensive, insurance is a great idea, as at some time or another, you will need a vet. Annual vaccinations, dog beds, collars and leashes, plus fees to a trainer will all influence your finances. Too many pets end up in shelters simply because their owners cannot afford them after a while.

The joy, the unbelievable 24/7 love your pet gives you, the motivation to get up early and go walking, the warmth of a pet sleeping next to you at night ( please folks, do keep your dogs indoors at night ), that’s what having a dog is all about.
