BRONWYN TANNER: Tuning In – Conservancy’s Green Team goes extra mile

Community news and events for Pennington and surrounding areas.

According to the Pennington Conservancy’s Green Team, every Thursday, a group of volunteers get together for a couple of hours and work hard at improving the green spaces in our lovely little village. When we have completed our morning’s work, we think about what we are going to do the following week over a cup of complimentary coffee at the Beach Café. It’s an absolute joy!

Hard workers (front to back) Juanita van Staden, Mandy van Prooijen, Linda Stead, Steve Stead, David Duma and Brightman Myende working on the steps to the beach and the dunes on either side.

We do not always do this work alone. Sbu Garden Services remove our debris at a very small cost and sometimes, we have to call on P&G Construction to help us with the heavy jobs, which they always do at no cost.

This month we started rehabilitating the small wetland near Postman’s Gully on Impathle at Palm, which also included restoring the pathway to the beach access over the railway line. The path had been under water for weeks due to a burst Ugu pipe, we removed a large bin that was full of stinking rubbish which obviously had not been cleared in months, cleared the steps down to the beach of vegetation and removed some alien vegetation bordering the wetland.

T&S Plumbing to the rescue.

Our long-term objective is to replace the invasive alien and exotic plants with endemic wetland flora which will create a little haven for and encourage frogs, birds and insects to the area. Sometimes though, we do other work in between these bigger environmental jobs. For example, we also cleared the gardens apposite the mall giving the beautiful aloes some breathing space, and we have worked on the paved pathway running alongside Pennington Drive, cleared some of the green zones around Relton hall and tend to the Makamati Trail.

Last week, we continued working at the wetland and cleared the storm water drain restoring the natural flow of water during rains. We will no doubt return there again.

However, we are more than happy to consider requests for improving our natural environment from residents of and visitors to Pennington.

P&G Construction is of great help.

We only have three conditions: what we do must have a positive impact on the natural environment, we will only work in public areas and should permission/authorisation be required, that is obtained by the person requesting our help.

We look forward to hearing from you, perhaps you even want to volunteer with us. Keep a look out on Facebook and at the Beach Café for our upcoming activities.
