Reviving Paradise: Mandela Month – a time to serve, connect and uplift

Just 27 minutes can make a difference – why July is the perfect time to reconnect, reflect and radiate good energy.

As we head into Mandela Month, we’re reminded to make an impact – just 27 minutes of service. What a small ask, really.

It’s been 30 years since that unforgettable Rugby World Cup in 1995, when we were on top of the world. Most people (if they’re old enough) remember where they were when the legendary Francois Pienaar lifted the cup, with Nelson Mandela beside him, showing solidarity in his No.6 jersey. It was a unifying moment – full of hope, pride and possibility for the future.

While many politicians have failed us, the people on the ground continue to reach out in incredible ways – helping, growing, supporting and encouraging those most in need.

I’m often asked how I stay positive, and it’s because I see the green shoots coming through. Caring for the environment is becoming more mainstream. Things we were saying five years ago are finally finding resonance, as the interconnectedness of all things becomes more visible.

July is a wonderful time to gather a group, join a cause, or simply do your individual bit – whether it’s 27 minutes, hours, or even days – to be of service and make a difference. This not only helps others, but benefits you too. As the saying goes: it’s more blessed to give than to receive. Giving reminds us that we do have something to offer. It activates gratitude, invites empathy, and allows for self-reflection. We’re all in this together – and the one thing we truly control is our own attitude and actions.

It’s more important than ever that we show discernment – and trust in ourselves and in our communities.

Let’s find what brings us together, and build on those connections. Inspire each other to create the reality we want. Every small positive thought, word or prayer shines a light in the dark. It creates a glimmer – a sense of safety and calm – that sends out ripples of good energy.

So here’s wishing you good vibes this July – as we head merrily toward the renewal of spring in our beautiful corner of paradise.
