One of the province’s biggest surfing events, Tweni2’s Pairs Surfing competition returns to the shores of Tweni Beach on Saturday, June 18.
The long-awaited revival of the competition will feature a formidable line-up of surfers. In the competition, surfers compete as a pair, duelling to outmanoeuvre their opponents to capitalise on the best waves in their heats.
The 2022 edition will feature the 2017 winners, the ‘Oreo Brothers’ which include Nicky Njapha and Byran Wigmore, the 2018 winning pair of Chad du Toit and Beyrick de Vries, Brandon Jackson and Josh Redman, Frankie Olberholzer and his son, Koby.
Ruddling brothers, Brody and Slater, from Warners are a new addition to the competition. According to the organisers, 2017 runners-up ‘Roosta’ Andrew Lange and Calvin Moore will reunite for the competition.
Fighting to keep the trophy in local waters are up and coming youngsters Clay Turrell and Jordy Boshoff; Evan Spittell and Kalan Springer, and Tristan Korsten and Alex Nut. Former South Coaster, Andrew Banks will be partnering with Justin Sykes.
The organisers said the competition will start with coaching for juniors by Roosta and past World Championship Tour Surfer, Royden Bryson at Tweni Beach on Friday, June 17 from 9am.
They added that this will be followed by an ‘expression session’ for the more competent juniors where prizes will be awarded for various moves, etc, saying that all the juniors will also receive a boerie roll.
The Tweni2’s Pairs Surfing competition will start at 7.30am and surfing will continue until the finals around 4pm.
