Cars stolen in Durban recovered in Murchison

Mpinge added that the vehicles were searched and a handgun of which the serial numbers had been filed off, was found in one of the vehicles as well as twelve rounds of ammunition.

Port Shepstone police recently recovered a vehicle in Murchison which was stolen in Ntuzuma, Durban in July 2019.

According to Port Shepstone police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge, the vehicle was recovered by the K9 Unit last Sunday.

Mpinge said police were doing patrols and spotted the suspicious vehicle near a hospital in Murchison, saying that the initial investigation revealed the vehicle was stolen in Durban.

“A 29-year-old was arrested and was charged for possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle. He appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on June 13 and the matter has been remanded to a later date for further investigation,” he said.

In another incident, Mpinge said on June 7, members of the SAPS K9 Unit were following up on information regarding an alleged kidnapping in KwaMadlala and spotted the said vehicle in Hibberdene parked next to a red VW Polo.

Mpinge added that the vehicles were searched and a handgun of which the serial numbers had been filed off, was found in one of the vehicles as well as twelve rounds of ammunition.

“The handgun will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in the commission of another crime in the country. The alleged 39-year-old kidnapped victim was also arrested after being found in possession of a suspected stolen Toyota Yaris. The vehicle was reported stolen in Umlazi in May. Three men appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on June 8 and the case was remanded to a later date,” said Mpinge.
