DA’s Rishigen Viranna moves to Sweden

Rishigen Viranna is to resign from the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature soon.

Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Rishigen Viranna, will resign from the legislature on August 16.

Viranna has been the head of the Democratic Alliance (DA) South Constituency for over eight years.

Speaking to the Fever, Viranna said the decision to resign came after he received a scholarship to study Global Health at Uppsala University in Sweden. He said the course will be two years long.

Viranna added that he will be out of politics on the South Coast because he will need to focus on his studies. He explained that medicine has always been a passion of his.

He said he previously studied toward becoming a medical doctor at the University of Pretoria, adding that the move to Sweden is the next step to ensure that he continues assisting the residents of KZN, as well as the pensioners across all areas including the South Coast.

‘The good doctor’ said it is difficult for him to say that he will never return to politics.

“I will remain as a member of the DA but just not be active in politics as I need to concentrate on my studies. It is very difficult to say this is a complete goodbye. I may definitely be back at a later stage,” said Viranna.

Speaking on what he will miss most about politics, Viranna said he will miss the spirit of ubuntu when people come together and help each other during a crisis.
He emphasised that in the eight years as the head of the South Constituency, he got to know a number of people and groups that made the South Coast a great place to live and work.

“I will miss the people who have always made my work and living on the South Coast great, Although we have our issues with the municipalities and provincial government, it is the spirit of ubuntu regardless of anybody’s race or creed that I will miss most. When there are problems, we come together and help each other, it is that kind of spirit that I will miss,” said Viranna.

He added that he will leave for Sweden mid-August.
