Life sentence for Port Edward rapist
The man remained in police custody throughout the trial.
Mthokozisi Mthoko Gumbi of Port Edward has had his name entered into the national register for sex offenders after he was found guilty of raping a 13-year-old girl in September 2019.
According to Port Shepstone police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge, said the 34-year-old was able to lure the girl to his room on September 14, 2019.
He said the brave 13-year-old managed to report the rape to a family member who then contacted the police.
Mpinge added that Gumbi was sentenced in the Port Shepstone Regional Court on July 6 to life imprisonment.
Gumbi was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and not permitted to work with children, in addition to his name being recorded in the national register for sex offenders.
“The family of the 13-year-old victim of rape received some justice when her rapist was sentenced,” said Mpinge.
He added that Gumbi remained in police custody throughout the trial.
The investigating officer was Detective Sergeant Nkosentsha Ntini of Margate Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
