Celebrating Mandela Day at children’s home

Mandela Day was observed internationally on Monday last week, July 18.

In celebration of the recent Mandela Day, the Port Shepstone Hospital Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) recently handed over donations to the Sacred Heart Children’s Home in Mthwalume.

Mandela Day was observed internationally on Monday last week, July 18.

According to Port Shepstone Hospital public relations officer, Phumza Morai, the staff at TCC donated clothes, stationery, and cosmetics to the children’s home.

Morai said under the slogan ‘Do what you can, with what you have, where you are’, TCC collaborated with different stakeholders in visiting the Sacred Heart Children’s Home.

She added that during an educational session at the children’s home, professional Nurse Thobeka Hlophe, raised awareness on the Thuthuzela Care Centre as a place that is in service to society and also touched on services offered in the centre.

“TCC and the stakeholder used their strengths, resources, and skills to equip the young children with the necessary information and resources to deal with the different challenges they face in their lives. Nurse Hlophe also elaborated on how to see signs and symptoms of sexual assault, what to observe on children, and when and how to report the crimes of sexual assault and abuse,” said Morai.

Meanwhile, Hlophe said: “It is more advantageous to report crimes of sexual assault to the Thuthuzela Care Centre as it is a one-stop shop for everything the victim needs such as Post Exposure Prophylaxis treatment (which must be given within 72 hours), the opening of the case, collection of evidence, therapy and ongoing counseling.”

Hlophe also shared emergency numbers for the police and Childline with the staff of Sacred Heart Children’s Home.

Also, Sister Duduzile Ndlovu, the operational manager at TCC, motivated the children to never give up in life, saying that there are many possibilities.
