Zikalala condemns Mthwalume funeral incident
Zikalala said he directed the department to fully investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident which took place over the weekend in Mthwalume.
The new MEC for the KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Sihle Zikalala has condemned the actions of the Induna who prevented a family in Mthwalume from burying their loved one.
Zikalala said he directed the department to fully investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident which took place over the weekend in Mthwalume.
He said the Induna is accused of refusing a family to bury their loved one which led to the family having to return the loved one’s body to the mortuary.
He added that he is aware that Cogta is working with Umzumbe Municipality, Inkosi, and his Traditional Council in addressing the matter.
Zikalala said he calls for calm surrounding the matter and for the department to be allowed to investigate the circumstance surrounding the disturbing incident.
“We wish to get to the bottom of this matter, what we saw in the videos that were circulating on various social media platforms is truly disturbing. What they experienced is something that we do not wish on anyone and requires a thorough investigation” said Zikalala.
He added that he noted with concern that similar incidents have occurred in the same area and formal legal processes are unfolding, to effectively deal with such unfortunate and dehumanising circumstances that involve local authorities.
