Ward 13 Umdoni councillor sworn in

The Umdoni Council now consists of a full complement of 37 councillors with changes to the ANC and Democratic Alliance’s (DA) number of representatives.

The African National Congress (ANC) in Umdoni Municipality received an extra seat in council following the recent Ward 13 by-election.

African National Congress candidate, Ravinand Maharaj won the ward during the July by-election.

Umdoni municipal spokesperson, Sphelele Cele said Maharaj was recently sworn in as a councillor during a special sitting of the Umdoni Council on Friday last week.

Cele said the Umdoni Council now consists of a full complement of 37 councillors with changes to the ANC and Democratic Alliance’s (DA) number of representatives.

She said the ANC moved from 17 to 18 seats while the DA occupied seven seats prior to the resignation of Maharaj which dropped their representation to six.

“Other parties still remain with the same number of seats. One for Allied Movement For Change (AM4C), five for Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), five for Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), one for Al Jama-ah and one for Abantu Batho Congress (ABC),” said Cele.

Umdoni mayor, Sibongile Khathi said: “We are pleased that the municipality has gained a ward councillor that has a great work ethic and strongly believes in the development of communities. We are confident that his eagerness to bring about change to the communities that we serve will be evident in the ward he leads in the nearest future.”
