Road still remains closed after 2022 floods
The road was closed after it was affected by the April 2022 floods.
The ongoing heavy rains continue to cause damage to the road between the Gamalakhe Community Health Centre and the Gamalakhe swimming pool.
The road was closed after it was affected by the April 2022 floods.
At a recent Ward 28 public meeting, residents raised concerns about the road that has not been fixed, saying it is mostly used by school children and emergency services.
Previously, Lindokuhle Hadebe of Ward 5 raised concerns about the sinkhole that opened in the area during the April 2022 floods.
“Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) has yet to close the sinkhole. We demand the sinkhole be closed and that the road be fixed. The road next to the swimming pool is used by children attending numerous schools which means scholar transport uses the route,” said Hadebe.
Ward 28 councillor Bekithemba Zulu said, unfortunately, RNM does not have the means to fix that road.
RNM spokesperson Simon April said the municipality was aware of the damage and how important this road is to the residents of Gamalakhe.
“This is one of the roads that has been registered as infrastructure damaged during one of the disasters that have taken place in our province and our municipality. Funds to fix the infrastructure usually come in tranches from the national or provincial government, and nothing has come for this road,” said April.
