‘SGB members should never abuse their power’

The Education MEC, Mbali Frazer, said SGB members should never abuse their power because they will cause trouble that will take the Department of Education back, instead of moving forward.

School Governing Bodies (SGBs) should never be a source of problems and division in schools.

This was a sentiment shared by the KZN MEC for Education, Mbali Frazer, as she congratulated the newly elected members of SGBs in the Ugu District.

Frazer said SGB members should never abuse their power because they will cause trouble that will take the Department of Education back, instead of moving forward.

The MEC was speaking at an induction workshop for SGB members at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.
According to the department, an SGB must ensure that a school is governed in the best interest of all stakeholders, adding that members must always put the interest of the school before any personal interests.

The South African Schools Act stipulates that an SGB must promote the best interest of the school and ensure its development by adopting a constitution setting out how it will operate, a mission statement, a code of conduct for learners which sets out disciplinary procedures, help the principal, teachers and other staff members to perform their professional functions.

It should also decide on school policy including admissions, language and finance, as well as administer and control the property of the school, buildings and grounds. Parents, learners, teachers and other staff should be encouraged to offer voluntary services.

It added that some key responsibilities of the SGB are decision-making, planning, conflict management, team building, negotiation, and school finances.
