Ugu development karate shine at champs

There is promising depth in the sport in the region.

A group of emerging athletes from the Ugu region attended the KSA Development Championships and Women’s Cup held in Mpumalanga recently.

The KSA Development Championships is aimed at athletes who are of coloured belts and who are up-and-coming in the sport of karate before reaching the elite level.

This competition was held jointly with the KSA Elite Women’s Cup to commemorate Women’s Month and women in the sport of karate.

Ilhaam Amod, an elite female athlete from Ugu, represented the region in the Women’s Cup and received a gold medal in her 16/17 kumite category and bronze in the 16/17 kata division.

A number of athletes took part and earned medals in the development champs. They were Christiaan Potgieter (individual kumite bronze), Joey Cowin (individual kumite bronze), Drishti Duki (gold individual kumite, silver kata), Eldon Potgieter (individual kumite gold), Neriah Peeriyilal (silver kata, silver kumite), Bernardt Pretorius (bronze team kata), Handré Weyers (bronze team kata, individual kumite bronze), Tristan Appalraju (individual kumite gold, team kata bronze), Michaela Atherton (individual kumite bronze) and Sarah Sahli (gold individual kumite).
