Man drowns in lagoon

Eyewitnesses had reported seeing an unidentified man disappearing under water.

A man drowned in a lagoon, off the Wild Coast Sun and Casino, on Sunday afternoon. Port Edward NSRI station commander John Nicholas said duty crew were activated after reports of a drowning in progress at the lagoon.

Nicholas said that eyewitnesses had reported seeing an unidentified man disappearing under water after appearing to get into distress while swimming.

“NSRI rescue swimmers, rescue craft Jet RIB, KZN Government Health EMS, KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services, the Saps and Police K9 Search and Rescue responded. We joined Wild Coast Sun lifeguards and emergency response on the scene, where lifeguards located and recovered the body.”

The man’s body was taken into the care of police and government health forensic pathology services.
Police have opened an inquest docket for further investigation.
