Missing teen’s decomposed body found in Mtwalume

The family was able to identify Siphesihle Khomo from the clothes he was wearing.

After missing for more than two weeks, Siphesihle Khomo’s decomposed body was found near the Jojo River at Nyangwini in Mtwalume recently.

According to his family, he was last seen on January 10, and they had been searching for the 19-year-old ever since. There were rumours that he had been seen at a local shopping centre, but the search was in vain.

However, everything changed last Wednesday morning, after family member, Zibuyile Khomo, received a call that a body had been found in the bushes near the river.

“When I got there I recognised his shoes and the tracksuit he was wearing, but his face was unrecognisable.”

Ugu District police confirmed that an inquest has been opened for investigation. Post-mortem results are being awaited to confirm the cause of death.

An emotional Zibuyile could not hold back her tears and said the family is deeply hurt because Sphesihle had been through a lot in his life.

She described him as a humble boy who had been taken advantage of on a number of occasions.

She mentioned that Siphesihle had been attending a case where he was a victim of rape, and after some time the case was dropped, and no one knows why.

“He was taken advantage of, sexually assaulted, but he had never received help nor was anyone arrested.”
Ward 10 councillor Bernard Tryon said the family had reported the boy missing and when he received the news that a body had been found, he rushed to the scene.

“The body was not in a good state, but the family was able to identify him because they remembered the clothes he was wearing at the time of his disappearance.”

Tryon added that Mtwalume has been, sadly, seeing more of such incidents.
