Joy as family in Mtwalume receives new house

Bukisa Chiliza said his heart is now at ease.

A family of eight in Nomakhanzana area in Mtwalume are delighted to have received a two bedroom house, with a bathroom, lounge and a kitchen from the Ugu Association of Business and Transport and the Lizwi Maphumulo Foundation.

The association and foundation members officially handed over the house, beds and groceries to the Shangase family on May 7.

Speaking on behalf of the foundation, Bongekile Xaba, said she noticed the family’s dire circumstances at a funeral at their home.

“They were living in a one-room house which was flooded and they had to place the coffin inside. I was saddened by the situation and could not bear to see them living in such conditions.”

Family spokesperson, Bukisa Chiliza, said he is excited that his family has received a house.

“The living conditions here were hard. My heart is at ease now knowing that my family will be sleeping in a proper house and in beds.”

Chiliza said that the family was living in two shacks and when it rained some family members would have to sleep at neighbours’ houses.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Sfiso Hadebe said Liziwi Maphumulo asked for help for the family and they were more than happy to assist.

“When we first arrived here, we also saw that the situation was bad because they didn’t have electricity, water or a proper house. We had to start from scratch and planned how we were going to build.”

Hadebe pleaded with other business owners to try and give back to communities, especially to needy families, no matter how small the contribution.

Xaba added the family still needs further help because the shelter alone is not enough, as a family member’s health is not good and she needs urgent medical attention.
