Fun walk in Port Shepstone raises awareness on lupus
The event is the brainchild of Phumelele Mbanjwa.
Founder of Elihle Samu Foundation, Phumelele Mbanjwa, was diagnosed with lupus a few years ago, and since then she has been raising awareness of the disease.
The non-profit foundation recently hosted its second annual lupus awareness fun walk in Port Shepstone, and the event was another major success.
Mbanjwa, who is from Oslo Beach, but based in Durban, said most people don’t know much about the disease, hence, the event.
“The goals and objectives we share are definitely united. We appreciate and show a heartfelt gratitude for everyone’s efforts.”
Mbanjwa said that she believes next year, the event will be even bigger and better.
Dr Nokwazi Moffet who works with the foundation said the disease attacks a person’s organs and body when the immune system is weak.
“It is not something a person is born with, but certain conditions allow it to attack your body.”
Moffet said doctors are still learning more about it, hence, the support for such initiatives so that communities can be made aware of it as well.
