VIDEO: ‘Fort’ Fabricius defends Skzn Closed golf title at San Lameer
The wet weather definitely had an affect on the scores.
DESPITE feeling that his ball striking wasn’t that solid and his putter luke-warm Graham ‘Fort’ Fabricius of Port Shepstone Country Club still managed to successfully defend his title at the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Closed at San Lameer CC on Sunday.

‘Fort’ because, no matter being not at his best, no one was going to take his crown away.
THIS IS HOW HE WON IT LAST YEAR: Case ‘Closed’ for Graham Fabricius
On a rainy, windy day he shot level par for 36 points over 18 holes. (The tournament will revert to a 36-hole strokeplay event next year, most likely).
Graham’s biggest threat did not come from his playing partners, ironically.
Instead it came from 8-handicap Jan Roos of Southbroom Golf Club, having one of the games of his life, who shot 73.
Third place went to Jason Gilliver who carded 77 for 31 points.
Gary Purtell (Southbroom GC) won the ‘Handicap’ section (medal Stab points plus handicap) on a count-out from Errol Rudman (Southbroom).
Fabricius started with a birdie and then adopted a cautious approach as the rest of the field made mistakes in the soggy conditions.
He was perhaps unnecessarily ‘safe’ off the box joking that the “short game starts from the tee”!
The premier league team to play Durban CC in two Sundays’ time comprises Gavin Sole (Southbroom GC), Sean Baker (captain – Margate CC), Graham Fabricius (Port Shepstone CC), Jason Gilliver (Selborne Park), Matthew Sutherland (Selborne Park), Francois Botha (Southbroom GC), Robert Mavundla (Margate CC) and Dean Goldhill (Port Shepstone).
In other news Colin Iddon has resigned as president of the sub-union.
His place will be taken by Sydney Shingange of Margate Country Club with John Ridl of Selborne Park likely to fill a newly-formed position of vice-president, though this still needs to be confirmed.
