Of tall trees and aeroplane wings

Youth development at the club continues apace.

COMPETITIVE tennis returns to Uvongo with a Tennis South Africa Junior Tournament to be held at the Uvongo Tennis Club courts from March 18 to 20.

Additional courts will be made available by Umtentweni and Douglas Mitchell clubs.

Locals will be able to feast their eyes on some explosive tennis as these juniors are big hitters of the ball.

The tournament will be an added attraction to the long weekend for tennis lovers and visitors.

Last Saturday morning a group of 33 young pupils were put through their paces by professional coach Julia Christiansen when being shown how to serve.

The back scratcher position made famous by Rod Laver is now old hat as the racquet now comes from behind the head rather than behind the back.

A ‘tall tree’ pose with extended ‘aeroplane wing’ arms pointing at the direction of the serve is recommended.

The forearm grip with extended index finger gives way to the hammer grip. The ball must always be tossed higher than an extended racquet to allow for a straight arm serve.

Evergreen Ralph Burls and Bruce Lill won the sponsored Green Chilli doubles tournament.

Howard Osborne and his Wednesday work group of sturdy volunteers completed the repairs to the cracks on courts four and five. After recent rains the contrasts in colouring has been reduced.

Welcome visitor to the club was Justin Mackrory, the CEO of the very successful Ugu tourism entity of Ugu District Council with a group of friends and associates.
