Redemption for Dean through CrossFit

In 2013, he was introduced to CrossFit by his sister. This is when Dean's life changed.

Many people lose direction, and in some cases their lives due to addiction and substance abuse. However, 32-year-old Dean Collocott of Southbroom has proven that he is not amongst the hopeless.

After many years of addiction and a few spells in rehabilitation, Dean turned to CrossFit to change his life and has never looked back.

CrossFit has provided a platform for a new life for Southbroom’s Dean Collocott who has proven its never late to change one’s life.

“It was a bad time in my life, and when the gym opened it was my only option, so I took advantage of it,” he said.

Dean trains at Wild Coast CrossFit in Margate.

He moved to Southport from Eshowe in northern KZN at the age of one with his family. He completed high school at Creston College.

“When I finished school I fell into a bad crowd of people and I started using drugs and drinking,” he said.

Dean Collocott began his journey to redemption and sobriety through CrossFit six years ago, and has never looked back since.

Indulging in heavy drugs such as heroin and alcohol abuse, Dean’s life changed for the worst to the point where he no longer had anyone around him. It led him to take the decision to check himself into a rehabilitation centre in Scottburgh.

“I checked myself into rehab in Scottburgh in 2011. I was there for a couple of months, came out and relapsed a few times,” he said.

In 2013, he was introduced to CrossFit by his sister. This is when Dean’s life changed.

“My mindset is so much more positive, and I feel like I have things to look forward to,” he said.

After enrolling at UNISA to study teaching in 2012 and after six years, Dean completed his degree and now works as a teacher at Port Edward Primary.

Having never looked back since then, Dean uses the mental strength that he gained from the sport to keep going.
