‘Ocean tax’ results in half tuna catch

To give an idea of how big the catch was, the remaining portion alone tipped the scales at 22kg.

It was a rather bizarre session of deep sea fishing for captain Chris Diedricks and his crew recently.

Diedericks and his crew were on board the Sosume Charters and were forced to pay some heavy ‘ocean taxes’ while reeling in a tuna.

In his attempt to land the fish, a grey shark swam by helping itself to half the fish.

To give an idea of how big the catch was, the remaining portion alone tipped the scales at 22kg.

However with all their taxes paid up, Luke Coetzee, a crew member was able to reel in another impressive catch, a 13kg yellowtail off Protea Banks’ notorious southern pinnacle.

In other news, fishing enthusiasts are invited to join in on the Dorado Derby from December 18 to 19 with launching open from Hibberdene to Port Edward (limited launches in Ramsgate).

The grand weigh-in will take place at the Ramsgate Lions Club. For more information and entries, email doradoderbycompo@gmail.com
