Juniors light up tennis in Southbroom

Some of the regulars were away but it didn't stop those who played from having a blast.

What looked like it was going to be a washout ended up being a wonderful time of tennis for junior players at Southbroom Tennis Club last Friday and Saturday.

Coach Frank Hall organises this event every year, and while some of the better known players didn’t make it, there were still enough to make it fun and interesting.

There was some pretty good tennis on display, with Bianca Otto and Katie Weller engaging in some long rallies. Bianca ended up the girls’ winner, with Katie the runner-up.

The boys’ section was much closer, but no one had an answer for Zakai Gilling’s huge serve and ferocious forehand. Alek Wagner was the runner-up, and there was some good play from Christiaan Otto.

The star player award went to Josh Bengsch. Joshua Buttermer won the U10 section, played the day before.
All round, the tournament was played in excellent spirit.

The six youngsters from Gcilima Primary, under the guidance of teacher Thabo Ngongoma, have shown tremendous improvement.

These players were Snothando Khowa, Nqubeko Jula, Thubelihle Ngcungama, Snothile Nqoko, Unathi Dlamini and Shusha Luhle.

Their excitement in being part of the action was palpable, and one can only see them improving further.
