Club champs records set by Gavin and Lindsay

There were familiar names at the top of the leaderboard again.

Gavin Sole was in a class of his own as he won the Southbroom Club Champs last weekend for the 16th time overall and 14th in a row.

His scores of 66 and 67 in the gusty wind were fantastic and, by all accounts, his lowest in a club champs and surely the record.

This is disputed by Mike Anthony, who swears the Big Fish was closer to 20 under on the numerous occasions he finished runner-up.

Jokes aside, it was a special performance from a special player.

Cameron Olivant and Jean-Marc Bouic, who both came into the weekend off the back of recent tournament wins (two each), finished second and third.

Cameron had rounds of 72 and 72, with Jean-Marc on 72 and 73. No doubt their turn will come one day.

The B-division was quite exciting, with Brian Jolliffe, Nicky Smith and Bob Clark all in contention.

Bob was one shot back overnight but had to withdraw during the round on Sunday due to an unfortunate injury.

Nicky tried hard but couldn’t catch overnight leader Brian, who ended up winning by five on a score of 170, which included a pair of 85s. Nicky took second place on 87 and 88.

The C-division (Stableford) was won by Phil Verwey, who overcame a five point deficit to win from Christer Solgevik on 60 points and Andrew Leckie on 59 points.

In the women’s section, Lindsay Owen created some of her own history with a record seventh win at Southbroom.

Her first round wasn’t her best, an 86, and she corrected matters the next day with a decent score of 79.

Gjertrud Kok was consistent in her two rounds, shooting a pair of 91s to finish second and also claim the bronze division by one from Irene Schanda, who had shared the lead with Lindsay overnight but fell off somewhat with a Sunday 97. Louise Leal was third on 194.

Shelley Myers won the Stableford division in fine fashion, scoring 69 points to finish four ahead of Gwyn Wright and Cynthia Daniels, who both ended up on 65 points.
Precious Mkhungo won the overall nett on 154, with Michelle van der Hoek runner-up on 167.

In the prizes are (from left) Gjertrud Kok (runner-up and bronze winner), Irene Schanda (third and bronze runner-up), Gwyn Wright (runner-up Stableford), Shelley Myers (Stableford winner), Louise Leal (third bronze) and Lindsay Owen (club champ).
